Genesis 15:17
The Unilateral Smoking Pot Covenant
God alone walking through the severed animal halves: the irrevocable guarantee of redemptive history.
In standard ancient Near Eastern covenant ceremonies (the 'berit' cutting), both treaty partners walked between the slaughtered carcasses, invoking self-maledictory curses: 'If I fail to keep this oath, may I be cut in pieces like these animals.'
The Asymmetrical Oath
In Genesis 15, Abram is placed into a deep, supernatural slumber. Only the smoking fire pot and blazing torch—the theophanic glory cloud of Yahweh—passes through the pieces. God unilaterally assumes full liability for the covenant, guaranteeing that the blessing of all nations cannot fail, even when human obedience falters.
