2 Samuel 7:12–16
The Unending Dynasty of the Son of David
The theocratic promise of an eternal heir whose throne and kingdom establish sovereign cosmic peace.
When David desires to build God a 'house' (a temple of cedar), God responds with a divine wordplay: God will build David a 'house' (an enduring dynastic lineage). This Davidic covenant becomes the single gravitational center of Old Testament messianic hope.
Beyond Solomon: The Eternal Scope
While Solomon partially fulfills the promise by building the stone temple, the language of 2 Samuel 7 ('I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever') deliberately transcends mortal kingship, setting the stage for the Son of Man in Daniel and the royal Christology of the Gospels.
