Philippians 2:5–11
The Carmen Christi: High Christology
The earliest Christian hymn declaring pre-existence, kenotic descent, and universal cosmic homage.
Philippians 2:5–11 contains what scholars recognize as one of the oldest pre-Pauline liturgical hymns in the New Testament. In two symmetrical strophes, it outlines the grand narrative arch of the Cosmos.
From Morphe Theou to Hyper-Exaltation
Existing in the form of God (morphe Theou), Christ did not exploit equality with God, but emptied Himself to death on a Roman cross. Therefore, God hyper-exalted Him and bestowed the Name above every name—so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow in heaven, on earth, and under the earth.
