Pentecost: The Reversal of Babel

Tongues of holy fire descending not on stone temples, but on the living gathered assembly, reversing the scattering of Genesis 11.

In Genesis 11, human arrogance at Babel resulted in the confounding of speech and the scattering of the nations under the judgment of God. In Acts 2, the Holy Spirit descends on Pentecost with the roar of a rushing wind and divided tongues of fire.

Global Re-gathering

Every nation under heaven hears the mighty deeds of God in their own native dialect. Pentecost is the formal reversal of Babel: humanity is not homogenized by empire, but unified in diversity under the sovereign reign of the risen Christ.
