Mark 2:23–28
Lord of the Sabbath: Ontological Authority
Why declaring lordship over the Sabbath was an explicit, forensic assertion of Yahwistic sovereignty.
When the Pharisees accused Jesus' disciples of unlawful labor for plucking grain heads on the Sabbath, Jesus did not offer a minor rabbinic technicality. He cited David eating the consecrated showbread at Nob (1 Samuel 21), anchoring His authority in royal privilege.
The Uninventable Claim
Jesus concludes with an ontological thunderbolt: 'The Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.' The Sabbath was instituted by God alone in Genesis 2; no prophet, priest, or king had authority over it. By claiming ownership over the Sabbath day, Jesus claimed the divine prerogative of the Creator.
